High-street banks to check first
For ordinary personal banking, begin with consumer-facing networks rather than an international bank's wholesale Bangkok office.
The list below is a service-model shortlist, not a claim that every brand will accept every visa or that every named network has an account-opening officer at every Chiang Mai counter.
| Bank group | Why it may enter the shortlist | Important foreigner check |
|---|---|---|
| Bangkok Bank, KBank, Krungthai and SCB | Large consumer and business networks with broad everyday services. | Confirm the exact visa or work evidence; KBank expressly excludes DTV for its published savings route and SCB publishes a work-permit route. |
| Krungsri, ttb, UOB and CIMB Thai | Full-service commercial alternatives with retail and business products. | Check local branch capability and product criteria; ttb basic is limited to foreign permanent residents or work-permit holders. |
| KKP, TISCO, LH Bank and Thai Credit | Smaller or more specialist consumer-facing banks that may suit a particular deposit, wealth, finance or enterprise need. | Check that the Chiang Mai service point performs the required task; LH Bank expressly excludes DTV for its published savings route. |
| Bank of China (Thai) and ICBC Thai | China-linked commercial banks with personal services but much smaller physical networks. | Confirm that a current Chiang Mai location handles the required personal product and foreign-national onboarding. |
| GSB, BAAC, GH Bank and Islamic Bank | Public-facing state banks with savings, agriculture, housing or Shariah-compliant mandates. | Confirm foreign-national and product eligibility; state-bank presence does not create general expatriate access. |
Where to search in Chiang Mai
| Area | Useful search terms | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Nimman and Huay Kaew | Nimmanhaemin, MAYA, Huay Kaew and Chiang Mai University | Convenient for the west side of Mueang; distinguish a mall counter from a full branch and check parking. |
| Old City and the east side | Tha Phae, Chang Moi, Night Bazaar and Chang Khlan | Street branches may offer fuller service than small counters, but hours can be shorter. |
| Mahidol and the airport side | Central Chiangmai Airport, Mahidol Road and Hai Ya | Mall hours can be useful; ask whether new-account applications finish earlier than the published closing time. |
| Fa Ham and the Superhighway | Central Chiangmai, Chiang Mai–Lampang Road and Nong Pa Khrang | Useful for the north-east side and business areas; confirm the correct mall or roadside location. |
| Chang Phueak and Santitham | Chang Phueak, Santitham and government-centre corridors | Neighbourhood offices can be quieter, but foreigner onboarding and English support should be checked. |
| Greater Chiang Mai | Hang Dong, Mae Rim, San Sai and Saraphi | Search by district rather than assuming a Mueang branch is closest; provincial addresses and opening calendars differ. |
A two-call branch check
- Use the Bank of Thailand record or the bank's own locator to identify the full branch name
- Call the bank's official contact centre and ask whether that named branch opens the exact account for a foreign national
- Call the branch where a direct official number is supplied and repeat the visa, work-permit and document facts
- Ask for the application cut-off time, appointment requirement and whether original documents or certified translations are needed
- Recheck the day before travelling and keep a lawful payment alternative until the account is active
Individual branch records
The Krungsri section includes a city hub and eight individual retail-bank records with a last-checked date. Separate photographed listings cover KBank and GSB at MAYA plus Bangkok Bank, ttb and SCB on Nimmanhaemin Road.
The five newer brand directories cover only the photographed locations, rather than claiming a complete provincial inventory. The three Nimman street-branch records include embedded versions of the supplied Google Maps listings.
Browse by area
Area hubs collect nearby branches without confusing a neighbourhood with one physical bank location.

Which bank in Chiang Mai is easiest for a foreigner?
There is no stable city-wide answer. Match the bank's current product rule to the applicant's visa, work or residence evidence, then confirm that the exact Chiang Mai branch handles new foreign-customer applications.
Are mall branches open later in Chiang Mai?
Some follow mall calendars, but hours and service cut-offs change. A branch may stop account-opening work before its doors close, so check the named location on the day of travel.
Should I use an agent to guarantee an account?
No intermediary can remove the bank's checks. Never pay for false address, employment or immigration evidence.
Use official bank channels and provide accurate documents.
