Opening a Bank Account in Thailand as a Foreigner

A visa explains why you may stay in Thailand; it does not automatically create a right to a bank account.

Banks apply product rules and customer due diligence, so the practical question is whether your identity, address, local purpose, tax status and source of funds fit the exact account being offered.

There is no single foreigner rule

Published bank rules already show meaningful differences. KBank and LH Bank exclude DTV and short-visit categories from the savings products described on their sites.

SCB's standard savings route asks a foreigner for a passport and work permit, while ttb's basic account limits foreigners to permanent residents or work-permit holders.

A branch employee can request additional evidence or decline an application after due diligence. Branch variation may affect capability or document interpretation, but it should never be used to evade a clear published prohibition.

How common circumstances compare

Planning matrix, not a promise of acceptance
CircumstancePractical strengthEvidence to prepare
Employed by a Thai companyOften the clearest routine purpose where the applicant has an appropriate non-immigrant status and work permit.Passport, current visa or stay stamp, work permit, employer certificate or contract, salary evidence, Thai address and contact details.
Employee of a BOI-promoted companyNormally assessed through a work-linked route; BOI promotion belongs to the project and is not a personal account guarantee.Passport, immigration permission, work permit or Digital Work Permit, employment evidence, Thai address, company documents and relevant BOI papers.
BOI founder or executive awaiting a work permitA conditional route may exist where the bank accepts Non-B status and credible pending-permit or business-owner evidence.Passport, Non-B status, employer confirmation, work-permit application evidence, company and BOI records, ownership or income evidence and any bank reference requested.
Investor or shareholder in an existing Thai companyPotentially credible where the investment and account purpose are evidenced; mere share ownership is weak on its own.Passport, stay basis, company affidavit, shareholder evidence, investment and source-of-funds records, Thai address and a clear reason for the account. Ask separately whether FCD, NRBA or NRBS is the correct product.
Long-Term Resident visa holderA specific BOI-published pathway exists with Bangkok Bank and KBank, still subject to case-by-case checks.Passport, LTR visa, BOI confirmation, another government ID, Thai address and documents supporting account purpose and source of funds.
DTV holder working for an overseas companyNot a reliable bank-opening route. At least KBank and LH Bank expressly exclude DTV for the products reviewed.Passport, DTV, overseas employment or client contracts, income and source-of-funds evidence, Thai address, tax details and advance written confirmation that the product accepts DTV.
Retirement, Thai family or educationCan be viable where the bank accepts the relevant non-immigrant category and the purpose is documented.Passport and immigration record plus retirement funds, marriage or family evidence, or a current school or university certificate; also Thai address and contact details.
Thailand Privilege memberAn assisted route exists and LH Bank publishes qualifying Privilege categories, but assistance is not approval.Passport, current Privilege visa or status, membership evidence, Thai address, named mobile number, income or business evidence and any service appointment confirmation.
Permanent residentA stronger durable connection; ttb expressly includes permanent residents for its basic account.Passport or recognised travel document, residence documentation, address, tax details and any additional identity evidence requested.
Tourist, visa on arrival or visa-exempt visitorPoor and often expressly excluded. Do not build a relocation plan around opening an account as a short-term visitor.Ask the bank before visiting and do not misstate the stay category. Consider regulated payment alternatives until a qualifying route exists.

BOI promotion, work permission and LTR are different things

A company promoted by Thailand's Board of Investment may have immigration and work-permit facilitation for qualifying people.

The company, its promotion certificate and your authorised role can support the commercial purpose of an application; they do not override a bank's customer checks.

LTR is a personal visa programme administered through the BOI. The BOI publishes separate Bangkok Bank and KBank account-opening processes for LTR holders.

Bangkok Bank asks the customer to contact the LTR Visa Unit in advance and says documents vary case by case; KBank's route requires identity and Thai contact or address evidence. Neither route is automatic approval.

Ordinary savings accounts and non-resident accounts

An investor without a resident retail route should ask whether the intended transaction belongs in a foreign-currency deposit account or a Non-resident Baht Account rather than an ordinary savings account.

The Bank of Thailand distinguishes foreign-currency deposit accounts from Non-resident Baht Accounts for Securities and for general purposes.

These products have their own purpose, balance, payment and documentary rules. They are not workarounds for customer due diligence, and a bank can still decline the relationship.

Describe the investment and expected money flows accurately so the bank can identify the correct account category.

DTV and overseas remote work

DTV can evidence lawful stay and an overseas work purpose, but it is not a Thai work permit. A bank may decide that its account or onboarding process requires a different connection.

KBank and LH Bank currently name DTV among excluded categories for their published savings-account routes.

Contact the bank before attending and use the words shown in the passport. Ask for the exact product rule, not whether foreigners are accepted in general.

Carry the foreign employment or client contract, recent income evidence, tax-identification details and proof of the Thai address, but recognise that good documents cannot cure a product-level exclusion.

Build one reusable evidence pack

  • Original passport, visa or stay permission and entry record
  • A second government-issued photo ID
  • Work permit or digital work authorisation where applicable
  • Employer, school, family, retirement, investment or LTR evidence explaining the purpose
  • Thai lease, residence certificate or other address evidence accepted by the bank
  • Thai telephone number and email address
  • Tax-residence countries and taxpayer identification numbers
  • Recent statements, payslips, contracts and source-of-funds evidence
  • Thai company and authority documents if the application is for a legal entity

Personal and company accounts are separate applications

Being a director, shareholder or investor can explain why you are in Thailand, but a personal account belongs to you.

A Thai company account belongs to the company and normally requires current registration, constitutional, tax, ownership, director, signatory and business-activity evidence.

Do not receive company sales into a personal account because it was easier to open. If a bank declines the company, understand the reason and compare another bank's entity criteria rather than blurring ownership of the money.

If an application is refused

  • Ask whether the issue is the product, visa category, missing evidence, branch capability or the bank's risk decision
  • Request the current document list through an official channel
  • Correct incomplete or inconsistent information before reapplying
  • Compare a different bank whose published criteria fit the real circumstances
  • Never buy a fabricated address, employment letter, work permit or account-opening story
  • Keep an overseas account and a lawful payment fallback until Thai access is confirmed

Frequently asked questions

Can a DTV holder open a bank account in Thailand?

Do not assume so. KBank and LH Bank expressly exclude DTV holders from the savings-account routes reviewed here, while other banks may have different or unpublished criteria.

Get confirmation for the exact product and branch before travelling.

Does a BOI company let its founder open an account?

BOI promotion and a genuine role can provide useful purpose and company evidence, but the bank still applies its product rules and due diligence. The founder's immigration and work position must also match the facts.

Is investing in a Thai company enough?

Not by itself. A shareholding can explain a financial connection, but the bank may need evidence of the investment, source of funds, address, stay basis and account purpose.

Investment also does not automatically authorise work in Thailand.

Can an LTR holder use the BOI bank process?

Yes, the BOI publishes Bangkok Bank and KBank pathways for LTR holders. The process requires specified evidence and remains subject to the bank's case-by-case checks and, for Bangkok Bank, branch-manager discretion.
