Read guide →What this bank directory includes
The commercial-bank inventory follows the Deposit Protection Agency's current list and contains 17 locally incorporated commercial banks, 11 Thailand branches of foreign commercial banks and one virtual commercial bank.
The state section adds the six bank-type specialised financial institutions supervised by the Bank of Thailand.
The Bank of Thailand itself is the central bank and regulator, not a personal-account provider. The Thai Credit Guarantee Corporation is a specialised financial institution but is a guarantor rather than a bank.
Finance companies, credit foncier companies and representative offices are also outside this bank directory. ANZ Bank (Thai) returned its commercial-banking licence in 2022, so a historical regulator record is not treated as a current bank.
LINE BK, Kept by Krungsri, Dime and TrueMoney are products, apps or wallets rather than separate licensed banks.
Other approved or announced virtual-bank ventures will not enter the active directory until primary sources confirm that banking operations have commenced.
| Institution category | Profiles | Usual relevance to a new foreign resident |
|---|---|---|
| Locally incorporated commercial banks | 17 | Includes the principal high-street choices and several corporate specialists. |
| Foreign commercial-bank branches | 11 | Mostly wholesale or institutional operations, not substitutes for a local retail bank. |
| Virtual commercial banks | 1 | Branchless onboarding; live product and identity rules determine access. |
| State policy banks | 6 | Some are public-facing, but each has a statutory savings, housing, agriculture, export, SME or Islamic-finance role. |
Opening an account as a foreigner
There is no single account-opening entitlement attached to being an expatriate. The bank chooses which products it offers and must identify the customer, understand the purpose and apply its risk controls.
Published rules can differ sharply: some products require a work permit, while KBank and LH Bank expressly exclude DTV and short-visit categories.
Use the eligibility guide to compare Thai employment, a BOI-promoted role, company investment, LTR, DTV, retirement, family, education and short-visit circumstances.
It distinguishes evidence that supports an application from a document that guarantees nothing.
Choose by service model, not logo
- Start with a consumer-facing bank whose branches and digital services exist where you live
- Check the exact account's foreign-national and immigration-status rules
- Confirm that the selected branch performs new-customer onboarding
- Compare app registration, debit card, transfers, cash deposits, English support and ongoing fees
- Keep personal and Thai-company money in accounts owned by the correct legal person
- Treat a foreign wholesale branch as a corporate option unless it confirms a personal service
Deposit protection and regulatory status
The Deposit Protection Agency publishes the protected-institution list.
Inclusion is useful for verifying an institution's current status, but protection depends on the depositor, account, currency and rules in force; check the current scope and limit rather than relying on a directory summary.
State specialised financial institutions sit in a different statutory category. Verify the treatment of a particular deposit directly with the institution and the relevant official authority.
From national inventory to local branches
The location directory is designed for records that can age safely: bank, service point, address, coordinates, services, accessibility, official locator, last verified date and status.
A listing should be rechecked before travel because mall counters relocate, merge or stop handling full account opening.
Chiang Mai is the first local section. It starts with the high-street networks and the practical districts to search, while directing readers to an official locator for the live branch choice.
Frequently asked questions
How many banks are covered by this Thailand directory?
There are 35 profiles: 17 locally incorporated commercial banks, 11 foreign commercial-bank branches, one virtual commercial bank and six bank-type state specialised financial institutions.
The central bank, a guarantee corporation and non-bank finance companies are not presented as customer banks.
Which Thai bank is easiest for a foreigner to open an account with?
There is no defensible universal winner. The answer changes with the visa or residence basis, work permit, local address, purpose, source of funds, chosen product and the branch's onboarding capability.
Compare published rules and confirm the exact office before attending.
Does a long-stay visa guarantee a Thai bank account?
No. Even an official long-stay route does not compel a bank to accept an application.
DTV is expressly excluded by some banks; LTR has specific BOI-published pathways with Bangkok Bank and KBank but remains subject to bank checks.
Are all banks in the directory high-street banks?
No.
The directory deliberately includes the full regulated bank landscape and labels foreign wholesale branches, specialist banks, the virtual bank and state institutions separately from ordinary consumer-facing networks.
